Trump won because (1) the corrupt gop leadership did not impeach each of the 2 times they had a chance, (2) Mitch McConnell, the power hungry man with no principles, who stated that Trump was responsible for the Jan 6th Insurrection, still voted not to impeach & thus bar Trump from holding any federal office - stating that the courts would take care of Trump . Not to forget the corrupt Leonard Leo (& Mitch McConnell) for 6-3 Kangaroo Supreme Court, (3) the Colorado Supreme Court correctly barred Trump from being on the presidential ballot & the US court of appeals had a 50 page opinion indicating that Trump was not immune. Yet our corrupt 6-3 Supreme Court first delayed their preordained corrupt ruling & then at the last minute gave Trump a get out of jail ruling & made him king - this after Trump as president attacked his own country on Jan 6th. Trump, via the US Constitution, should not have even been on the ballot. This same court weakened the voting rights act, gave us the dobbs decision, citizens united, overturned the chevron act. (4) the mainstream media not taking Trump to task for all the crap he did in his first term all the while pestering only Harris about her plans. Not a single media called trump a traitor, (5) the fake false Fox News media that brainwashes the people in the gop, (6) the uninformed voter - they will soon see the inflationary effects of across the boar tariffs & mass deportation, (7) some billionaires like musk who supported the convict and peddled lies. We may not have a democracy in 2 years, let alone 4. - look what happened in Venezuela recently. Germany in the 40’s was destroyed from within in 6 years.

I am proud to have voted for Harris - a competent & decent human being. I admire President Biden for being the 1st President to redistribute wealth from the very top to the bottom. I am proud to be in the Democratic Party - at least the party tries to do what is good for the people.

Trump should right now be sitting in a jail cell along with the Jan 6th insurrectionists already in jail, yet here he is about to resume the highest office in the land. US is going to become a very corrupt country as there are no guardrails on Trump & the corrupt power hungry gop leaders anymore - very sad & afraid.

Thanks for your passion and clear mindedness, Sabrina. What we seem to have passively accepted is the fact that an insurrection leader has gotten away with murder, when, had we had a functioning DOJ, he would have been arrested and held for trial in 2021. Instead, he's been allowed by a doddering nonfunctioning sitting (?) president Biden to run a parallel rebel government, and from a suite of golf clubs, no less. You can't make this shyte up, even on SNL. No wonder the talking heads of the MSM couldn't stop calling Our Mad King (wannabe) Donald "president Trump" or that Tramp exercised far more control over the Legislative and Judicial Branches of government than the duly elected Executive, oblivious to his duty or the reality of what he was allowing to transpire right under his nose. Tramp, god bless his soul, would have fired Garland and Wray in a week of nonaction.

Little wonder, then, that 10M (81M in 2020-71M in 2024=-10M) Dems just stayed home this time around. Must have mostly been men, as the women were on fire for a female president. However, and this is never mentioned by those same feckless talkin heads, Tramp must have lost a sizeable portion of his 2020 71M, as he only received 71.5M this time and was bragging about all the new voters he had attracted by his hateful antics. Somebody, please, get SNL on the phone! I must be living in an alternative universe, or the rest of our once esteemed nation have drunk the Kool-Aid and are in a coma, excluding yourself, of course. Keep up the courageous, honest work and your analyses of our woeful state of affairs. Have a blessed day! Gregg

Sabrina, you are far more optimistic than I am. I woild like to believe that things get so bad in two years that the gullible goobers who voted for Trump, not the cult racists, but the others that bought into his lies and self-promotion as a problem solving, albeit phallocentric, strongman could solve their problems, elect a Democratic Congress. Then, the optimist would hope Congress and put a check of the facisti dictaroial autocracy the country has become. In two year this may be too little and too late, But even this as I wrote in my downer of a blog between 11:30 and 3:00 AM today. I wrote "Trump can make 'it' happen here? 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.' " Trump with the selections he's made so far has shown us who he is and what he intends to do. Even if he manages to do half of what I laid out in the blog our country may never become a democracy. Here's the blog link: https://www.halbrown.org/2024/11/trump-can-make-it-happen-here-those-who.html

Great column! Love the reeling into the reality that the U.S. is not the only country whose incumbent party got booted out post COVID. Thank you.

The Holy Bible is the divinely inspired word of God. It is without error in all its teachings, including creation, history, its own origins, and salvation.

This is part of the statement of faith of an organization I was born into and left in 1999. It is a cult, pure and simple and a cheering section for American Evangelicals. I have unfriended many on FB and blocked a couple but have too many good friends and relatives to make a clean sweep. Unless I found out they like Trump

Hi Sabrina,

I’m taking a news-fast presently, but you are one of the few commentators I will continue to read. I’m also examining “citizenship” in a Socratic fashion. (I’m a self-described Christian HERETIC — who refuses to drink the KoolAid served up by biblical literalists, often from pulpits, and repeated by the rabble in Bible-studies.)

I note your observed rightward (“wrongward?”) shift, blaming literalism delivered from pulpits. As a grad student decades ago I studied ethics at an “ivy” divinity school — but not as a ministerial student. I thought what America need was a better grasp of corporate integrity. I wanted to examine the ethical bridge between Jerusalem and Athens. But the school had an oral sight-reading requirement from an ancient language in order to receive the degree (long since removed). Well, I couldn’t read biblical Hebrew (non-Roman letters, from right to left, without vowels, without letter-spacing, without punctuation, one long string of chaos!) The adjunct, my Hebrew tutor, kindly gave me a B-, but the handwriting was on the wall. So I left. (The school said I was welcome to return anytime. Ha!) NB: Ministerial students are warned never to touch the “third rail” of biblical literalism, as it will cost them their jobs.

My point in sharing this backstory is greatly sharpened by a powerful insight, written by a hugely popular professor, and NYT best-selling author, Bart Ehrman. Bart is an "ex-vangelical" – now self-identifying as an atheist, at a prominent university in the “Bible belt”. Your readers might want to pay attention to what he presents as the root cause of this issue, a major takedown of literalism in his book, ARMAGGEDON: What the Bible Really Says About the End. He debunks fatalism, thoroughly, via superb scholarship! ~eric. MeridaGOround.com

I guess Mexico is not a country....it had a leftist government and there was an election in 2024 and....the ruling party won handily. And yes, the Dems could well win in 2026, given the idiocy of Trump's policies. But such a revolving door, when one party is Fascist is unacceptable, even if the the scale of the victory is small. We desperately need a new party system, but we are highly unlikely to get one.

Mexico was the only country in the world that supported the incumbent party, and Financial Times didn't include it due to whatever metrics they used for their graph. I agree that putting a fascist into the oval is unacceptable; it's dangerous but temporary. I'm aware of the risks that it might not be temporary, but with this cast of clowns, their incompetence will prevent them from doing much.

You folks have a terrible case of TDS. You make sweeping, unproved generalisations and silly insults. Your emotional anger-laden statements aren't really thoughtful or even discussible. And you never talk about the sucesses of Trump's first term nor about how Harris lost so incredibly badly. Please fix the Democrat Party - we need a good center-left party.
