Sabrina, forceful and to the unfortunate point. I can only say something rather naive at this point: I wish you were arguing these point before SCOTUS at this time. How could the cogentness of your arguement not carry the day....?

thanks but I'm glad I'm not arguing, I'd have a hard time feigning respect for either Thomas or Alito, and I wouldn't do much better with Kavanaugh.

966308... I am sickened by the way 45 has siced his dogs on our country. I have spent plenty of sleepless nights, along with everyone I know, with fears of destruction coming from people who fear no court or prison with 45 having such power. The " little guy" is NOT going to come out of this unscathed. I am a retired person, who is so worried about the future, I do not know what to do first to save myself and my family. It seems that everything was tried to stop this madness before the election, and now we must just take the ride. I feel powerless, and I hate that feeling. I can NOT just tune all this out. Will the black robes be our saving grace? My hopes are not high. Where is our Captain America? I wait with bated breath.

Chilling. I agree, your argument is solid. And WTF is wrong with John Roberts?

roberts has been a tremendous disappointment. but coney-barret isn't as much of a zealot as I thought... when you consider the threats trump has made to GOP senators, and musk's promise to primary anyone who criticizes trump, I wonder if trump has something on Roberts. Alito and Thomas are too compromised to worry about, but I expected more from the rest.

If I might interject, Amy seems to be a principled conservative. It's no wonder the MAGAts are turning on her. And I think she reminds Roberts of what could have been...just one fisherman's opinion.

Trump does believe he is above the law and so far it seems that he is. It's about time we put him in his place!

Yup. Next thing you know, he'll be cancelling student loans, after admitting that he knows that it's unconstitutional.

Sabrina,

Waking up before my partner did to fetch two dozen roses from the garage where I'd hidden them, blearly eyed, I looked first at my email and just above the message that you'd posted your Substack was this from TIME: Trump keeps teasing a third term. https://time.com/7222820/trump-third-term-president-explainer-pathways-constitution-courts-legal-experts/

The article begins:

Donald Trump’s second term has only just begun, but he and his allies are already teasing the prospect of seeking a third. “I suspect I won’t be running again,” Trump told his Republican colleagues in the House last November, before caveating: “Unless you say, ‘He’s so good we’ve got to figure something else out.’”

The 22nd Amendment has already had its say: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”

Holy fracken excrement! You write about Trump's lawless power grab in the first weeks of his presidency. Now he is testing the waters for a third term. We saw his excutive order ending birthright citizenship which is clearly unconstitutional. Now he is testing the waters for another unconstitutional action. Holy --- fill in the blanks!

Anyway, for the second day in the usually snowless Portland, Oregon suburbs, it is snowing, and it is beautiful outside. I was born in New York, lived in Michigan and Massachusetts, and I really miss the snow and how it transforms the landscape. I wish it could work its magic on the Trumpian Hell the country has descended into.

Happy Valentines Day.

Happy valentines day to you too, Hal. And thank you for recommending the Haake Take, several readers came my way.

About trump's lawlessness, I'm glad he's already talking about a third term; I assumed erroneously that he'd wait until his 3rd year, but after the midterms he'll be too weak. I'm glad he's hitting it now bc it will alienate a lot of people, including conservatives.

If we get to 2028 and he's still alive we'll no longer be living in a democracy anyway.

Expand full comment
MrJimm's avatar

And that statement is based on.... what, exactly?

When we get to 2028, you should expect that there will be nation-wide Voter ID laws in place, so we'll all be certain that millions of undocumented Republicans won't be voting. And all of those undocumented Republicans will have long been deported, besides.

And mandatory paper ballots, too, so that any claims of machine-hacking can be resolved overnight.

And, finally, Trump has already issued an Executive Order banning government officials from interfering with social media companies (like the FBI did before the 2020 election regarding the Hunter Biden laptop), so you know that the election will be free & fair.

Beyond those specific things, Trump is cutting back on the Federal Government's power over American citizens - hardly the example of a budding dictator.

Are you seeing something that I'm missing? Where are you all getting these ideas? Besides Sabrina, I mean. She still thinks Trump's a moron and an imbecile, and in an earlier post I just proved to everybody here what a genius move Trump pulled in setting up DOGE.

Quite the opposite, Sabrina.

Your columns are not only wrong, they're outstandingly, stupidly wrong, and I'm enjoying myself immensely pointing out all the errors in your thinking with facts & logic. Trump a fascist or a dictator? C'mon, man! (To quote the most corrupt president in the history of the United States, not that you'd ever criticize him.)

I just pointed out how DOGE was set up in a perfectly legal manner, and also how the Democrats' are reacting to it (they haven't objected to a single example of waste or fraud as a success, they're only acting as if they're scared of losing a vast amount of under-the-table funding) and your only reaction is to stoop down as far as you can get to continue to call Trump names.

Really, now.

As always, a brilliant analysis. I was literally hopping mad watching the Musk press conference from the Oval Office and I remain furious with the ignorant, uneducated, uninformed voters who did this. I was watching the confirmation hearing for Tulsi Gabbard on Youtube and made the mistake of scrolling through the comments, virtually all of which were spouting the most juvenile invectives and one-upping with the name-calling (Adam Snuff -- really, is that funny?). They still don't get it. I wouldn't wish ill on anyone (with a few notable exceptions), but if we're going to suffer the consequences of the damage it is at least some consolation knowing they will suffer as well.

thanks but lets be honest, you and I are in the top income bracket. the people who will suffer the most are in the lowest bracket. on a good day, I feel compassion for them, but recently there aren't so many good days.

the takeaway realization for me is that human evolution is splotchy and uneven. we have neanderthals, 5th century clerics and elkhart tolle all on the same planet at once, and probably always will.

Thank you for your post. I look forward to reading more. As an Army brat, I was raised with a strong feeling of pride in our country. I am now mortified at what I am seeing and hearing. I am ashamed of our country - not just Trump and Musk although they are the worst of the worst - because I am not seeing people standing up and fighting for our honor. The world hates us, NATO wants to kick us out - as they should at this point. Five Eyes wants to become Four Eyes because they cannot trust America. Trump is willing to take by force that which he cannot get with his "charms" and "deals." Thank God Canada, Greenland and Panama are willing to stand up for themselves. Thank God NATO other other countries have come to the aid of Ukraine. What Trump has and is doing to them are war crimes. The biggest tragedy to me, though, is the lack of action here on our own soil. Anyone, EVERYONE, should know by listening to what Trump says that he has, indeed, become a madman. One question I would hope you have time to answer for me. Where is the ABA? Where are the attorneys whose chosen career has been so maligned by Trump and his "legal team?" If those who openly flout judicial rules should be sanctioned under Rule 11, whose duty and authority is it to do this? One last note. I have worked for attorneys and am amazed and how f-g smart you folks are. Jeesh, for a close-to-home note, just look at your own record. The citizens and the voters must do our part, but just to get things rolling I would love to see the legal profession nail Trump's ugly ass to the wall along with all his toady attorneys.

Many Americans have been wishing for a royal person like a KING to lead them and now their wish has come true, he has the power to do what every he wants - Off with their Heads - is his motto, he has even taking up arms against the King of the commonwealth with his suggesting he take over Canada , KING Trump wants the power like Putin, Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping, so he can control every aspect of life from conception , through education, to death of the American and he will succeed as he has many blind followers and very few opponents who have the gut to take a stand for FREEDOM it is really a pity America has taken this path to the future

It is sad that the reality of a great idea are the one's who do not want to move towards a great idea, and a perfect union was better when it was a segregated approach. The appeal that Trump has is towards a 'superiority complex' and structural violence that is passive and oppressive. It is not frowned upon because it is encouraged. Face it, for a country to elect a convicted felon as their President, to be acceptingly oppressive, and to declare war on alliances undermining peaceful borders - even Barbie is at war in the country of Mattel - wanting acclaims that are based on smoking mirrors. For the most part, there are people who dont care - their histories are riddled with unprosecuted crimes against humanity - their anti-social behaviour exemplifies the idea of a perfect union, was not a diverse approach and it remains the intent of some to keep it that way, forever.
