Look upon it as a test after 250 years of free-pass democracy, to see whether a) we’re up to the task, b) deserving of the privileges, benefits, rights and c) rough-and-tough enough to fight off an avowed enemy of democracy who happens to be running the show. He is a juggernaut, will stop at nothing until democracy is dead and buried, our rights pulverized, our people subjugated. Courts will do their best, but sometimes let him through the gate to rage further. The test is purely ours. We are the ones who must pass. Otherwise...
Please provide statutory or case law that provides US citizens the right to refuse to answer CBP questions at the border. I live in a border town and cross into Canada very often for work and family. I would like to keep a printed copy in my glove compartment to hand the officer while I remain silent to his/her questions. I don't even want to verbalize to them
so as to appear argumentative. I'd like to just pull out the document and politely hand it to them.
Since you cross the border frequently please keep us informed (Sabrina and I) so if you have an interesting encounter we can publicize it. Make sure to try to take a video.
I'm actually more worried about my husband (Canadian) who's daughter lives in the States. We're going to get our burner phone set up for his use when crossing. And much as I hate to say it, if he is asked his opinion about Trump or the administration, I've suggested he lie, and say how wonderful it is that Trump is there, keeping his promises, shrinking the government, and deporting all those illegals. (But he might choke on it because he's a proud member of the NDP (New Democratic Party) and is a dedicated democratic socialist. (Oops, did I say a bad word?)
I’m the old Democratic Party the one that believe in democracy and has been stomped on by everyone that thinks they can do it better.. the progressives joined and they have a voice and if the independents and libertarians and former republicans joined we could oust every Republican in now that has let the Republican Party fall to maga and the Project 2025 authors…. Many in the administration!!!
If it gets as bad as it could there's no way to hide your politics unless you do all your communiction on the dark web and even then they may find everything you texted or emailed. Still, burner phones are a good idea. I recommended this to two sets of friends coming here from overseas. They didn't do it, instead scrubbing their cell phones. That is a minimal protection.
This invasion of privacy and lawlessness is another reason so very many Canadians are not coming to America. It’s inconceivable that the mayors of border towns think that their entreaties of “please ignore the nonsense of the president and come back to our towns”. Seriously! Talk about heads up their collective **ses!
Yep. There are commercials on my local Canadian station to visit the North country and/or Plattsburgh. And we do hear from their local reporting that tourism in the area from Canadians are down. Many on the New York border area voted for the DumDum, so save your money on selling us your attractions. You voted against your self interest. It is unfortunate that though Vermont next door is more liberal they too are seeing Canadian tourism drop. Maybe those tough MAGA guards at the northern borders will be reassigned to the Southern border now that cross-border traffic has slowed down that not as many are required. I wonder if they'd be happy with that arrangement. 'Stupid is as stupid does' .
I agree… the money in US Republican Party brought to us by a law Citizens United…. Has turned our country into a disgrace. Republicans in Congress and the Senate never impeached him last time he was in.. they continue to allow him to take apart our democracy and if we vote ( or can) them out we will get our country back so I get it I would stay away ! We will do our best to save the country that use to be free!
Not only does Trump’s pro-Netanyahu/anti-Gaza genocide criticism endanger Jews everywhere in the world, but it invites confirmation of the well-worn conspiracy theory that “Jews secretly control the world”, for how else to explain Trump shilling for the Jewish state’s Fascist Authoritarian leader and his policy of annihilation against Gaza and beyond? Who does Trump answer to in this religious war of attrition, where the “Eye-for-an-eye” ratio is running around 100:1?
Detention at the border and expanding the border areas is the beginning of their fantasy to suspend habeas corpus rights. We cannot shrink and admit defeat. This is the exact time we must stand up to this slow creep of tyranny!!
I spent four years as a US Navy sailor, defending our Constitution. While I claim a "right of return" I will not venture north from Mexico until TSA border control relax their violations of my 4th amendment right of privacy in my "papers" (and in my right to criticize unjust harassment at our borders). I consider it a duty as a citizen to hold authority accountable to our Constitution. So, for me, I will remain in Mexico for awhile longer. Meanwhile, my latest blogpost offers a mini review of a hilarious book, The Socrates Express, about train travel to the haunts of various philosophers. (NB: "death" is a fellow traveler. Spooky!) ~eric. MeridaGOround.com
Next step is to oblige all citizens of the USA who were not born in the USA to sew an orange circle on their clothes so those who support MAGA , the Republican party and Trump's policies can expose them to the authorities so their papers can be verified and their ideas be corrected - i thought "We the people " had dealt with this back in 1776 and decided there should be checks and balances - What happened seems every one is scared shitless
Since the start of his second term in office, US president Donald Trump has cultivated a political atmosphere that discourages freedom of thought. He also actively villainises and punishes any dissenting opinion. Worryingly, this atmosphere looks like it is spreading across other democracies.
Commentators have described Trump as both narcissistic and authoritarian. Yet, running parallel to these factors, one character trait is glaringly common among Trump supporters: sycophancy.
You just have to examine the pre-election rhetoric of Trump loyalists. One backer, Stephen Miller, declared him “the most stylish president … in our lifetimes”. Miller is now deputy White House chief of staff.
And South Dakota governor Kristi Noem gifted Trump a four-foot Mount Rushmore replica – with Trump’s face added alongside the original four presidents. Noem, who is now secretary of homeland security, epitomises the elevation of loyal sycophants over those with arguably better credentials.
(My comment: Trump is the most styish president of our lifetimes... and even more Holy Fuckenshit, Noem gave him a FOUR FOOT Mt. Rushmore statue with him on it!)
Funny thing. Shows how in the cosmic scheme of thing we must be connected. I also wrote about free speech today and how close we are to losing our rights to say what needs to be said to save democracy. My idea was prompted by a picture of a sign Ann's sister emailed her. It said "Welcome to the White House. Please report your bribe to the guard on duty at entrance." This was decidely not amusing. Then I wrote: "Should we laugh at things like this, should we cry, or should we scream?" here: https://halbrown.substack.com/p/should-we-laugh-at-things-like-this
You wrote about a personal example of what is happening to indiviudals. Yesterday I wrote about what could happen to both of us at some point. After all we are easy to find and anyone who is out to get rid of Trump's enemies can easily find us. I wrote "How long before ICE or other members of Trump's Gestapo search my iPhone or my name plus Trump online before I am on my way to prison?
National interest. Defined as...a grab bag of excuses with no bottom. I take it definable by the sup court as one of KRASNOV's core responsibilities, you know, like greed.
These idiots don’t understand that you want these students’ opinions out in the open, rather than strategizing behind closed doors. Open forums allow for discourse, hidden agendas bring doubts and hate, you know, just like Trump’s deplorables, hiding behind masks and guns.
Consider having to delete personal free speech information from our electronic devices the same as the Nazis burning books. It is an assault on passing free information, condemning the MAGA accepted point of view, and replacing it with zombie thinking. Only one thought allowed: America is great under Trump. That nauseating thought should be enough to resist with all our might. We teach our children the basics of human interaction and the knowledge to succeed, but we don't impede their individuality or life choices. Maturity and intellect come from the many experiences in their lives. We don't interrupt the process, nor should the government interfere with our freedom to think. Revolutions have been fought for this very reason. The more they attempt to trample our rights, the more they fuel our Resistance.
Surprise, surprise, a dictator sets up a dictatorship. I'm aghast! Who saw this coming? Everyone? Noone? Have a blessed day.

I'm definitely planning on purchasing a burner phone, even for domestic travel -
This should really help hurting businesses that benefit from international tourism. What a head for business the King of Bankruptcy has!

Irony upon irony with Sir! A man who can barely speak attacking Free Speech. I am assume he's doing so through an interpreter.
Not related to this subject, but I want to share this article: "Trump surrounds himself with sycophants. It’s a terrible way to run a business – and a country." https://theconversation.com/trump-surrounds-himself-with-sycophants-its-a-terrible-way-to-run-a-business-and-a-country-257391
