Trump’s unhinged proposal to take Gaza, “relocate” more than a million starving people to an unspecified locale, and turn their bombed homes into a resort for the wealthy didn’t go over well. Following his threats to Colombia, Panama, Mexico, Canada, Denmark, and Greenland, the civilized world is
Sabrina, wow! a hit out of the park. You've forcefully, insightfully, and accurately documented the truth of this sordid situation among our neighbors. (Another stellar speech by Cory Booker is on You Tube now.)
I have an inclination to say 'let's hope' --but that's not enough, not what these times call for. Here's what I think should be done NOW: Musk should be called before Congress to investigate his inauthorized break=in to government offices. Should be given the choice: were you the sole perpetrator of these actions (planner and chief instigator) -- OR did another give you permission and encourage your actions? If Musk takes full responsibility, the path is clear: charges of insurection and straight to remand pending trial for treason.
On the other hand, if Musk indicates Trump as the planner-in-chief, immediate proceedings in the House for impeachment --no. 3.
I don't think we have the luxury at this point to act any less decisively or courageously. For those who give a sh*t, Moscow Mitch will have his 3rd opportunity to do the right thing.
in a functioning democracy musk would have been arrested by now. the dems can't do much when the GOP has the majority, even a thin one, and remain all in w trump, not bc they agree w him but bc they fear him. more specifically, they fear musk will put his billions into the next race(s) and primary them, which musk has promised to do for any republican who opposes trump's agenda. bottom line, citizens united created musk and will be our downfall if we can't fix it.
The Republicans have hitched their wagon to Trump and will not abandon him now unless forced to. The threat of Musks money is an excuse, they never had spines to begin with and will happily go down with the ship than ever admit they were fucking wrong about anything.
Trump wants so desperately to be "loved", so I think a good tactic to drive home to him, what a fool he really is, would be to publicly make a laughing stock of him. He is impressed by his executive orders and the chaos they are causing. He realizes that he is causing an upheaval, which he is enjoying. But other than that, nothing serious has happened, at least not to him. So he just continues to execute his plans, knowing that no one is going to lock him up. Just don´t let him know he is creating this unrest. Just show him how stupid he actually is. The day will come anyway when he will be forced to face the law.
that's why watching Colbert and Kimmel should be act of resistance No. 2. (right after boycotting companies that support trump, advertise on fox, or advertise on X.)
Have you checked out JL Cauvin? Brilliant comedian impersonates Trump in short videos on YouTube. When you need a good belly laugh. Great article by the way!
I think our allies have forgiven "us" for Turmp. "Us" means you, me, and all of our friends who saw this coming and tried to warn about it. I doubt, however, that they forgive the American legacy media for their head in the sand "it won't be as bad as everybody thinks it will be if he wins coverage" of Trump leading up to the election. By and large the mainstream media pooh-poohed the evidence that Trump intended to follow the Project 2025 playbook.
I like your scalpel analogy. What I thought of was how Trump assumed he could be like robbers in heist movies when they plan a robbery, say, during the Super Bowl. They plan to rob a bank on the other side of town because most of the police force will at the stadium. Canada and Mexico are the smart cops in the movies who figured out the plan and moved their elite SWAT team to hidden positions across from the bank. Indeed, Trump got swatted by Canada and Mexico.
Hell, I will never forgive us for Trump….we just found out that about a third of the country is incredibly racist and likes Nazis…there are people in this country that would be fine with concentration camps and if they say, “oh no, I wouldn’t let it get that far”….yes, they would, because once it gets to that point, it’s already to late. They’ve enabled a sadistic asshole to seize power. They’ve enabled him every step of the way. The GOP US Senators in Congress are more worried about getting re-elected than stopping him from doing what they would never have allowed a Democrat to do and they never had to worry about a Democrat actually doing this cruel unnecessary power grab. And don’t even get me started on a disgustingly corrupt Supreme Court. This country has lost its damn mind. I hope other countries punish every red state company and every MAGA business that they can. I hope they start refusing entry into their countries if MAGA people and Republican politicians etc. If a Caribbean country has a Republican politician and his family entering for a vacation, I hope they are refused entry and sent back here. Punish these Nazi loving, Democracy hating assholes at every opportunity.
I don't think all of maga would support concentration camps. the problem is that trump is preying on the uneducated, who have no idea about history, so don't recognize that trump's following hitler's playbook. I do think economic pushback will eventually work. boycott companies that advertise on fox or X. red state economies, life expectancies and education levels are already far, far lower than blue, maybe some day they're figure it out.
Yeah, I get carried away. I’m very ADHD and OCD….I don’t like chaos or extreme changes. One of my majors in college was history and I feel like I’m watching Hitler rise to power all over again. In my head I know Trump is just copying Hitler’s tactics to grab as much power as he can, but I also know how easily things can just get out of hand. Once it goes too far it’s hard to get back to normalcy. And people can be so cruel and vicious. I’ve seen so much anger and wild behavior online. Road rage, maga rage, far left rage, are all so prevalent on social media that I can’t decide if we’re just seeing it more because everyone has a camera in their phone and it’s always been here or is there really just much more of it. I’m finding it harder and harder to see the good in people. So much nastiness and Trump just makes it worse. No shame anymore in people. Thank you for your reply. It did help me to take a deep breath.
The HIC and his Republican supporters are overlooking national sovereignty, individual cultures, and proud citizens. Canadians, Mexicans, and the many targets of the HIC wrath will acquiesce to threats to their nations. Booing the American national anthem signifies the mighty Americans overstepping their international bounds. It is better to be a global partner than to be an aggressor demanding that other countries submit. America is not the only country to shed blood to obtain freedom and is willing to shed blood again to preserve it. Without sovereignty, there is no freedom; without freedom, life is not worth living. If America continues to follow the HIC’s madness, it may lead to unnecessary bloodletting. The world has grown since the days of indiscriminate conquests, and it has evolved as an assembly of civilized nations. The HIC is a man who doesn’t understand what respect is on a personal level and feels that treating nations as he treats his minions with threats and promises of inevitable violence is his way to rule. A dangerous man egging the world to shed blood or submit. At this point in history, Republicans in Congress should be the ones to stop the catastrophe. Our own sovereignty is at stake.
I completely agree. Violence is coming. Every time trump declares an "emergency," it's to inch us closer to deploying the military against Americans. he's engaging in deliberately cruel antics to provoke the left and create rage, like firing the 40 year military major, the first female to ever head a military branch, because she supports DEI. (code for, she's gay.) he's targeting his EOs specifically to trigger dems and own the media. He thinks Eugene Robinson should be "fired" for pointing out the humanitarian work USAID does.
trump is a criminal. he has blood on his hands. he's doing everything to feed red meat to his base, which he thinks will keep him in power until he dies a natural death, bc he knows he's going to prison when the dems come home.
The news overwhelms every single day but every now and then someone comes along and rebuilds the context. It's like the time my oldest grand daughter visited and reorganized my pantry so now I can find stuff. Thank you Ms Haake. Of course, it all comes down to Citizens United legalizing corruption and decriminalizing all attacks on democracy. The Roberts Court majority is the enemy of the people, equality and justice. I don't know how we're ever going to right this ship but we have to try and keep trying. Thank you again.
Hi Sabrina. Canada thanks you. DumDum as stirred up our patriotism to a new level for disrespecting us. There are racists & anti-government types here too but for the most part we are progressive as you state, very multicultural, prochoice, enjoy universal healthcare (even with its deficiencies), anti-guns, public safety quality of life, our coloured money bills plus Loonie & Toonie coins, and Tim Hortons, amongst a few things. And here in Quebec the Joie De Vivre of living in a French society. I never ever heard anyone wanting to be part of America. His idea of America is antithesis to being a proud Canadian.
My heart breaks over trump's embarrassing insults to Canada and Mexico. I'm deeply sorry about what he's done and will continue to do in service to his own ego. It's true that 49% of voters elected an hallucinating halfwit, and that his executive orders are a surrogate for governance for those people. But, as Trudeau obviously knows, a much larger percentage of Americans didn't vote at all. When you combine Harris' votes with the non-voters, 70% of the nation DID NOT vote for the felon. Please keep reminding your compatriots of that fact; I've been repeating it, as often as possible.
I also realize America will pay dearly for Trump, and that the damage to our national security, international reputation and relationships with allies has already been done. trump's ignorant ramblings about taking Gaza have already given Netanyahu, Putin and Xi the permission structure to do what they want. trump is incapable of that analysis, but my guess is his advisors know, and don't care.. Performative rage and hurting people who didn't vote for him is trump's only focus, and it's pretty obvious he's building support to stay in power after his term is up.
On top of being deeply stupid, Trump is a malignant force of evil who has no concept of what he's destroying. he and musk are like teenage boys with a wrecking ball with no concept of how to build what they're destroying and I sincerely regret that his evil will spread across borders.
When you combine the non-voters with the President Trump's supporters 71% did not vote for the crazy Leftists! Try using a little logic with your screaming....
So right you are , but again the ordinary American is not reading what you write, and would not quite understand what you are stating, you have to use one to three words like Trump does to get you point across, even the people working at FOX need to be spoon feed, mind you they just playing into an uneducated audience . we have to remember most American think Trump is a wonderful person after all he was a movie star and they like the sound " You're Fired" , mind you wait until they find out that they are "Fired" it does look however like the number of unemployed and unemployable people is going to increase drastically , I do not see how that is going to reduce government spending, it is certainly going to reduce commerce as these people will not longer have money to purchase American made goods
while I largely agree with your message, you lost me at 'most americans' think trump is good... 70% of the country did NOT vote for trump. Trump won 49% of the vote compared to Harris’ 48%, a difference of 1%. More importantly, 90 million eligible voters didn’t vote at all, a number that exceeds the number of voters for either Trump or Harris. Out of 245 million eligible US voters, nearly 70% did not vote for Trump. (75m Harris voters + 90m non-voters= 165 million, or 67% of 245 million eligible voters.)
Disengaged apathy s a separate problem, but it does not equate to supporting the hallucinating halfwit cosplaying as president.
The Dog & Pony Reality show has not yet convinced most that they are irrelevant. On one of todays Sunday morning political MSM talk shows a polling suggests the government is acting strong, doing what was promised. Tells me most are enjoying watching entertainment television run their lives. It's all smoke & mirrors to put on a show, which the public perceives as an administration which knows what it is doing. I have actually yet seen one thing that will improve peoples lives are than the orders which endorse their various biases. Conversely, there are orders that will make their lives, vis a vis drug prices, anticorruption enforcement , business fraud, foreign government bribery, religious freedom - actually freedom in general.... more than just less affordable but yet to be felt.
When you combine the non-voters with the President Trump's supporters 71% did not vote for the crazy Leftists! Try using a little logic with your screaming....
Thank you Sabrina. I especially appreciate your details about on what Canada will be charging tariffs. No blue state products, especially no California products. We appreciate that more than they know. It's a great list for the rest of us. Of course, we Californians would not buy any agricultural products from Florida, and our new heat pump stove will be made in Berkeley, where I live.
blue states should coordinate a giant 'thank you' to Canada and Mexico. I think I'll send that idea to newsome, though it will take someone with a larger following than I have to get through to him. If you have a following, maybe you can start it?
Me? A following? It is to laugh, as Pogo would say. But I would start with spelling his name correctly, "Newsom". But I think I may send him an email based on your writing...
You got me to look up whether Neanderthals had hammers. I wondered if they were that advanced. I was picturing the hammers I have in my tool drawer. In fact, you can see what Neanderthal "hammers" and other tools looked like here: https://neandertals.org/tools.html Reading about how far beyond monkeys their intelligence was, I think you are being generous in your characterizion of Trump & Co. This being said, tongue firmly in cheek, seriously, I do agree that they have blundered their way out of the starting gate tripping over their own feet in many ways. I just read that in firing all the probationary employees at the Department of Energy they inadvertently fired those whose job it was to maintain our nuclear arsenal, and they are desperately trying to reach them to recall them back to work. That is a stumble out of the gate that deserves more publicity. They are stumpling and falling flat on their face in many piles of fresh horse manure. (Actually it is more like pig shit, since horse manure doesn't smell that bad. Pig shit stinks. I learned this living rural Michigan where there were lots of hog farms and I've been in horse barns.)
Unfortunately, we learn about all the poop-on-their faces stumbles. Generally they don't break through the only impenetrable wall Trump ever constructed, the wall that keeps the truth of his idoicy and malfeasance out of the adled brains of his cult.
On another subject, in your RawStory essay, "What's holding Trump back may surprise you" ( https://www.rawstory.com/raw-investigates/susie-wiles/ ) you give a credit to Susie Wiles for strategically slowing down Trump's authoritarian Nazi-like blitzkreig. You wrote "I harbor no doubt that this Nazi-adjacent administration will eventually tear up court orders and embrace the use of violence (again) to stay in power, likely deploying the military this time. But I don’t expect Trump to be this obvious, this early, because his Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is smart."
My question to you is: how in the bag with Trump's goal of becoming a ruthless dictator is Susie Wiles? Do you think she knew what his real intentions were when she signed on the be his chief of staff? Is it possible she hopes stick aound to compete with his own deeply ingrained Machiavelian psychopathology and his equally sick malevolent henchmen and enablers? We can ask the same question about others who accepted jobs in his administration who might not want to be his Himmlers, Görings, and Eichmanns. Pam Bondi, despite her recent illegal shenanigans, and Marco Rubio come to mind.
Then there's the Supreme Court. Do you think any of the right wng justices have buyer's remorse for their sweeping presidential immunity decision? If so, who would they be. Are the right-wingers in the Supreme Court all in on turning the country into an autocracy-slash-oligarchy?
those neanderthal rocks look like hammers sans handle to me... your questions are tough and broad and, at least for me, unknowable. my guess is susie wiles, musk, vance and others are attracted to and lustful for power more than anything. and my unsupported hunch is that power as an addiction is more compelling than heroin. that's only relevant as a factor in trying to predict what they will do when trump starts ordering Putin-style assassinations. Some will try to thwart him and some will pull the trigger, as they have throughout centuries.
About the Roberts Court, federalists have always believed in expanded executive powers. I think the court will support trump's efforts to overturn some federal statutes that protect federal workers from firing without cause. so my advice to any federal employee or union is to include a 1st amendment claim in any legal challenge they file, bc while conservatives like to fire people without cause, they are less likely to support firing them for political speech, which has long been protected by both sides.
It is chilling that reasonable people like us who avoid using hyperbole just for the sake of using hyperbole say things like "what they will do when trump starts ordering Putin-style assassinations. Some will try to thwart him and some will pull the trigger, as they have throughout centuries." We use appropriate "Putin the assassin analogies" and Nazi analogies.
It isn't just the wrtten word. Sometimes we just post photos. Do a Google Image search for Stephen Miller and Joseph Goebels:
Did you catch Joy Reid this morning? If not, she had Nayyera Haq on. She was a senior advisor in the State Department and also worked in the White House ( Here's her website bio: https://www.nayyera.com/about ) The panel was discussing how Vance met with the far-right German party leader and not the chancelor. What I found gratifying and noteworthy is when another panelist asked her what she made of this she said it was an embrace of Nazis and Nazism. I may have missed this, but this is the first time I've heard the word Nazi on an MSNBC show.
Here in our Substack-sphere many of us don't hesitate to say, basically, that if someone walks like a Nazi, talks like a Nazi, and acts like a Nazi, they are Nazi.
Because most people aren't that familiar with the abbreviations for the agencies that replaced the KGB - the SVR, FSB, FSO, and GRU, I always use the term Gestapo to describe the personal enforcement group of thugs Trump wants at his command to carry out his psychopathic orders.
Hitler had Himmler, Göring, and lesser known names to run his Gestapo and SS. We will have Thom Homan and, if he is approved, Kash Patel.
Hardly a week goes by that I don't replay the final scene of "Apocalypse Now" with a dying h Brando saying "the horror, the horror."

Some of us, me for example, put Hitler moustaches on Trump and Tom Homan on BlueSky:

Wow!!!
Oh, how I would love to see GOP senators relocated their missing spines! Sadly, I'm not holding my breath.
